Final Post

Final Blog--

I had a lot of fun writing my final piece for this class. At first I was completly lost, without more direction than 'write a narrative for one person' I had no idea what to do. I spent most of my time throwing out ideas. Eventually I decided to write something, "Falling Asleep". One night as I was trying to get to sleep I thought how interesting it would be to just write down what was going through my head, and so I did! I have never really considered myself a writer in any form, but this was something that flowed easily for me. In the end I was really proud of what I created.
Having Kevin perform it was fun as well. I knew I was going to need someone with more of a theater oriented background to try to express what I had intended. It still came out differently than it did in my mind, but I decided that it was better that way. Everyone has different kinds of thoughts as they fall asleep and so a personal flair was well placed.
Performing my classmates work was difficult. I felt that this class was really in no way geared towards music performers. I felt like a fish out of water most of the time. I felt that if I had had a background in dance or music technology I would have been much more productive and useful in this class. Most things we did involved acting or bodily motions, which to someone who has not worked on things like that in years is very daunting. I do not feel comfortable getting up in front of the class and dancing interpretively, even the drama warm-ups we did made me feel very out of place. I have not participated in such an extroverted world with my body in many many years. I feel comfortable on stage with a flute in my hands, but when you take that away my confidence goes down the drain.
All this being said, I did have a good time in the class. It was fun to watch what others created and to work collaboratively on projects. It gave me a chance to get out of the box a bit, which is always a worthwhile endeavor.
